Grigorescu revives in this landscape the monumentality of the Norman skies he knows so well. A pictorial and spatial protagonist of the image, the sky vault covers 2/3 of the height of the canvas. It is separated from the earth by the unusually low and equal horizon line, by comparison to Grigorescu’s hill landscapes. A stream appears to be drawn parallel to the horizon. Landscape probably painted around 1900, after the almost exclusive choice of greys and after the invasion of atmospheric air that cloaks everything.
Did Grigorescu encounter this sky in his travels in Romania or perhaps it was a memory that he combined with the image of the caravan observed by his attentive eye?
