Grigorescu records a show of nature which touches on the finest cords of his sensitivity. He transposes, in a sovereign freedom of the means of expression, the ending of a sunset, when the final reddish glimpse vanishes from the horizon. No other human presence disturbs the intimacy of communication between the Artist and Nature in this quiet landscape, with equal light. Heaven and earth share the painting area almost equally. Several accents mark the composition discretely, preventing the monotony of a potential symmetry: the canopy of the tree marking the centre of the image above the skyline and the diagonal hill rectangle dropping from the left side. The ample, sure strokes of painting matter are quickly set from left to right, in neutral muted green colours, corresponding to the nightfall moment. The motif returns in several instances.
A work identified and catalogued by researcher Remus Niculescu. Two versions of similar sizes are recorded by Remus Niculescu in the personal file: one dated 1896, which remained in the artist’s workshop (currently at MNAR); another one, Fall Effect, a painting reproduced in the “Minerva” Calendar 1908, p. 76 (information sent to Alis House by care of Mrs Elena Niculescu).
Orig.: Dr. Stela and Vasile Miceanu Collection, Bucharest, 1970s (Remus Niculescu documentation).
